Insulating your home can help to keep it warmer longer. In the cold months, this can stop you from having to turn on the heating as often, saving you money on your energy bills. In cutting down your energy usage, you can also help to save the planet. There are lots to insulate your home – here are just five of the most effective measures.

Insulate your loft

25% of a home’s heat can be lost through an uninsulated roof. There are several ways in which you can insulate a roof. You can install your own insulation boards or lay down blanket insulation such as fibreglass or Earthwool. Alternatively, you can hire professionals to spray on insulation foam – this is the most expensive option, but the most effective.

Opt for double-glazing

A lot of heat can also be lost through the windows of your home. Switching to double-glazed windows could help to prevent heat being lost through your windows. You should hire a professional company to handle your windows replacement. Cheaper temporary options for stopping heat escaping your windows could include putting up thick curtains in the winter or using insulating window film. Many homeowners find that vinyl window replacements offer them the outcome they’re looking for.

Seal up entrances against drafts

Insulating isn’t just about keeping heat in but also keeping cold air out. Entrances that are left unsealed can let in cold drafts of air in the winter that will rapidly cool down your home. Gaps in between exterior doors and door frames can be a big source of drafts. If you’ve got a chimney that you don’t use, you may also want to make sure this is sealed up. Similarly, make sure there are no large cracks in walls or holes in the roof that could be letting drafts in.

Buy a hot water cylinder jacket

A hot water cylinder jacket can prevent heat being lost through your cylinder walls as the water is heating up. This allows your heating system to heat up more quickly, using up less energy. Hot water cylinder jackets are a fairly cheap form insulation, but very effective. You can also insulate pipes in your home in a similar manner, although this may require hiring a plumber (especially when it comes to internal pipes).

Consider cavity wall insulation

Many old homes also have uninsulated walls. These can be the biggest source of heat loss. The most common way to insulate walls is to spray foam into the wall cavities. Insulation boards are another option if you don’t have a cavity in your walls. As this can be a large-scale and intricate job, you’re best hiring professionals to do it. Cavity wall insulation can be one of the most expensive forms of insulation, but it will also provide the greatest return on investment
